NYTimes, May 16, 2008 The California Supreme Court, striking down two state laws that had limited marriages to unions between a man and a woman, ruled on Thursday that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. The ruling, striking down laws limiting marriages to unions between a man and a woman, would make California the second state to allow same-sex marriage. And in Alabama (www.sovo.com) In what some activists consider a bellwether moment for gay rights in the U.S., the Alabama House of Representative passed a pair of gay- inclusive bills in the same day earlier this month. Legislators voted 46-44 to amend the state’s hate crimes law to include sexual orientation, and unanimously passed a measure aimed at reducing bullying in schools.
